The Independence Police Department Announces New Assistant Police Chief

The Independence Police Department is pleased to announce the appointment of Derek Bryant as the new Assistant Police Chief. Bryant brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record in law enforcement, making him an invaluable addition to our leadership team.

Bryant started with the Independence Police Department as an Auxiliary Police Officer in October of 1993, and then as a full-time Police Officer in May of 1994. Bryant was promoted and served as a Lieutenant from 1998 to 2009. He transferred to the Detective’s division in 2009 and is currently the Lead Detective. He is a certified Fire Investigator II through the Office of the Kansas State Fire Marshal, he is a certified Less Lethal instructor, and was a member, team leader, and then Commander of the Special Tactics and Response Team.

Bryant’s extensive background and commitment to serving our community align perfectly with our department’s mission. He has demonstrated a steadfast dedication to upholding the highest standards of law enforcement professionalism and ethics throughout his career. I am confident that Assistant Chief Bryant will play a pivotal role in enhancing our operational effectiveness and strengthening our community relationships.
