Peter Pan Road open for traffic

The City of Independence is pleased to announce that traffic is flowing again on Peter Pan Road north of Main Street, as the initial phase of road improvement projects has been completed.

City Manager Craig Whitehead explained the first round of improvements included a complete road rebuild, with widening, new culverts, new traffic and pedestrian signals at the intersection of Peter Pan Road and West Main Street, and improved shoulders and business entrances north to the new Independence Healthcare Center.

A second round of construction is planned in late summer or early fall, which will extend the road improvements an additional 900 feet (.17 miles) to the north. Currently, a short gravel “taper” is in place in preparation for the additional paving work to come, Whitehead explained.

This additional work will require a second closure of Peter Pan Road but is expected to be complete by January 2019, Whitehead said. The additional improvements will be funded through a $300,000 economic development grant from the State of Kansas, and the project could be accelerated if Kansas Department of Transportation approval of the plan moves quickly.
