Notice to Owners of Property Within the 1% (100 year) Floodplain
The City of Independence Building Department is requesting that residents and business owners report any structural damage due to the flooding caused by recent heavy rainfall.
Property owners located in the Floodplain areas of the City of Independence are reminded that a Floodplain permit is required by FEMA prior to any structural repairs. The Floodplain permit is required by FEMA to track storm damage. If the City did not participate in this FEMA requirement it could jeopardize the ability for citizens to obtain flood insurance in the future. There is no charge for the Floodplain permit.
Notice is hereby given that the City of Independence Building Department will be conducting inspections of properties because of the recent flooding. Inspections of properties in the floodplain will be in order to determine substantial damage. Any property in the 1% annual chance special flood hazard area will be required by FEMA to have a floodplain permit to complete repairs. If you are required to have flood insurance, you are most likely in the 1% floodplain. If you are unsure, please send us a message with your address and we will let you know if you are in the 1% floodplain.
For any question or concerns regarding damage to a residential/commercial structure, inquiring if your property is located in the floodplain or to obtain a floodplain permit contact the City of Independence Building Department 811 W. Laurel or 620-332-2541. Floodplain permit forms are also available on the City’s website at www.IndependenceKs.gov.
Thank you for assisting us in this process and we apologize for any inconvenience.
