City extends Sanitation Yard access to May 29

Other changes implemented for junk collection

The City of Independence has extended its daily staffing of the City Sanitation Yard, 21st & Maple, to May 29 to allow residents to drop off their junk and large debris.

The debris drop-off program was originally scheduled to end Friday, but the extension means the sanitation yard will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday for the Memorial Day holiday (City offices also closed Monday and no sanitation service); then open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, May 26-29.

After June 1, the City will continue to accept junk and large debris items at the Sanitation Yard two days a week indefinitely – each Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (during regular recycling collection hours); and each Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

City staff will be on hand at the sanitation yard during open hours to supervise drop-offs and provide guidance. Items accepted for disposal include large junk and debris items, appliances, furniture, construction materials, etc. Automobile tires are accepted, but no tractor or implement tires are allowed. Additionally, the city cannot accept household hazardous waste, such as paint, motor oil or chemical solvents, and household trash is not allowed.

The program is available to City of Independence residents and utility customers only. It is not available for commercial or contractor waste.

The City’s monthly Saturday recycling collection will resume Saturday, June 6, from 8 a.m. to 12 noon, and the City’s dumpster rental program will resume June 1. Dumpsters may be requested by calling (620) 332-2500, option 3.

For all programs requiring interaction with City staff or fellow residents, the public is encouraged to exercise caution by practicing social distancing and wearing protective face coverings.
