City crews will begin the annual process of courtesy neighborhood leaf pickup on Tuesday, December 13. For leaf pickup purposes, the city has been mapped into 15 “zones” which crews will tackle between Tuesday and mid-February, contingent upon weather and equipment conditions. Crews will operate in numerical order, with Zone 1 pickup on the southwest corner of town beginning Tuesday, followed by Zones 2 through 15. A color-coded map of the leaf pickup zones can be viewed on the City’s website at https://www.independenceks.gov/Admin/DocumentCenter/Document/View/2893/2022-Leaf-Pickup-Map.
Following is the pickup schedule:

Citizens are reminded of a few important considerations when preparing leaves for pickup:
- Leaves should be put by the curb or street but NOT IN the street, as loose leaves can be a safety hazard for cyclists, pedestrians and auto drivers.
- Leaves should NOT be placed in the alley, as the City’s vacuum machine cannot navigate alleyways.
- No brush, weeds, rocks, bricks, etc., should be added to the leaf pile. This kind of debris can damage the leaf pickup equipment. If crews notice debris in leaf piles, they will bypass the pile.
- Those with an urgent need for pickup prior to the scheduled date should bag their leaves and set them out for the Sanitation Department. The first 10 bags will be collected at no charge. For more than 10 bags at once, a minimum fee of $25 will be charged.
