Utility hardship rate applications now being accepted


The City of Independence is accepting "Hardship Rate Applications" until January 31, 2024, for utility customers. A "Hardship Rate" is for families who meet HUD low-income criteria and are in need of relief related to their water, sewer and trash service fees.

In addition the HUD income guidelines, the following eligibility requirements apply:

· Hardship rates only apply to families living inside the city limits;

· The family must have resided within the city limits for the previous 12-month period;

· The water/sewer account must be listed in the name of the hardship subscriber; and

· The hardship subscriber must be recertified in January each year.

Hardship Rate consideration is only offered once per year, and applications are available at City Hall, 120 N. 6th or on the City of Independence's website at https://www.independenceks.gov/DocumentCenter/View/2113/Hardship-Rates-Application-PDF
