As Independence Day approaches, Independence Fire-EMS urges all residents to celebrate responsibly by following critical firework safety guidelines. Fireworks are a traditional part of the July 4th festivities, but they also pose serious risks when not handled properly.
โWe want everyone to enjoy the holiday, but safety must come first,โ said Aaron Cook, Chief of Independence Fire-EMS. โEvery year, preventable injuries and fires occur because of improper firework use. Weโre reminding everyone to follow these guidelines and prioritize safety.โ
Firework Safety Guidelines from Independence Fire-EMS:
โข Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
โข Older children should only use fireworks under close adult supervision.
โข Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
โข Anyone using or standing near fireworks should wear protective eyewear.
โข Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands.
โข Never light fireworks indoors.
โข Use fireworks only outdoors and away from people, homes, and flammable materials.
โข Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
โข Light only one firework at a time and move back quickly.
โข Never ignite fireworks in containers.
โข Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
โข Soak used and unused fireworks in water for several hours before discarding.
โข Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby in case of fire or malfunction.
โข Never use illegal fireworks.
Independence Fire-EMS also recommends attending professional firework displays whenever possible as a safer alternative to home use.
