Water/Sewer Department

The City of Independence Water and Sewer Department is responsible for maintaining a safe, reliable, and efficient water and wastewater system for our community. This combined department oversees the installation, operation, and maintenance of the City’s water and sewer mains.

Our team maintains the water distribution system, installs new service lines and meters, performs annual fire hydrant flushing, and repairs or replaces residential and commercial water service lines and meters as needed. On the sewer side, we repair and replace main lines, install sewer taps, and ensure all sewer lines remain clean and free-flowing.

The department also operates and maintains the City’s sewer pump stations, which transport wastewater from homes and businesses to the treatment plant for processing — helping protect public health and the environment.

Water Leaks

If you notice a water leak at your property, contact a licensed plumber first to check if the leak is on your private line. Property owners are responsible for repairs on private plumbing and service lines from the meter to the home or business.

Sewer Alarm or Backed-Up Sewer

If you are experiencing a sewer backup or sewer alarm at your property, please contact a licensed plumber first to determine if the issue is on your private line.

Utility Line Marks

The State of Kansas requires, by law, that all utility lines be marked before any digging takes place by calling Kansas One-Call at: 1-800-344-7233. The City of Independence marks water and sewer mains when contacted by Kansas One-Call. Any water line that runs between the meter and the residence or business is considered a private line and the City does not mark private lines. Any line connected to the sewer main is also considered a private line.
