Animal Control
Animal Control for the City of Independence is handled through the Code Enforcement Department. Complaints or concerns regarding animals can be reported to Dispatch by calling 620-332-1700, 24/7.
Responsibilities
The City of Independence employs one Animal Control Officer. Normal operational hours are Monday through Thursday 6 am to 4 pm. However, hours of operation may vary depending on need.
In addition to requests regarding dogs and cats at large, residents may also call to request traps be set in the area for nuisance animals such as skunks, stray cats, dogs, etc. The animal control officer not only enforces the city ordinances concerning animals but also investigates cases of animal cruelty and vicious animals.

The following animals are required to be licensed within the City. Licenses can be obtained through the City Clerk's office or a local veterinary clinic.
- Dogs
- Cats
- Chickens
- Rabbits
- Are any animals prohibited in the City?

Yes. It is against the law in Independence to keep:
- Pitt Bull Dogs
- Hogs or pigs
- Goats
- Sheep
- Roosters
- Other Livestock, unless certain space criteria are met

The City of Independence uses Animals With Our Love (A.W.O.L.) for impoundment. A.W.O.L is located at:

Please note that all pets reclaimed from A.W.O.L must leave the building leashed and collared. You may bring your own leash or purchase them on-site.
- Does the City of Independence have a leash law?

Yes, It is illegal for a dog to run at large. All dogs must be on a leash per Section 10-52 of the Independence Municipal Code.
- Is it legal for my dug to run in the park?

Animals must be kept on a leash in all public areas except for the Independence Dog Park, located at:

Animal Shelter
The City of Independence does not operate an animal shelter, however, AWOL (Animals With Our Love), a non-profit organization, operates within Independence and works closely with the Independence Animal Control Department. Their facility is located at:
